Who We Are
We believe people should tell their own stories. The A-Noise broadcast and
archives fuse politics, art and culture to encourage activism and create a collective
memory of our successes. This is not the predatory mainstream media, but a straight-up grassroots communication network, by the people for the people.
A-Noise is a collaborative project organized by independent sound makers to coincide
with the protests at the Republican National Convention in New York City. Our
goal is to create a welcoming and supportive structure that sound artists, journalists, radio
groups, and activists of all skill levels can plug into during the RNC. The overall
project will include workshops, editing workstations, and air-time programming
on a coordinated webstream network of many stations.
We are conscious of gender, race, and class issues. We are committed to representing
New Yorkers, and including and valuing contributions
from all interested resistance communities. Your participation is essential!
Groups working on the A-Noise project include: free103point9, the New York Indymedia
Sound Team, Rise Up Radio, Autonomedia, Enemy Combatant Radio, Portland IMC, and many amazing radio and sound allies
around the country.
Content
Around-the-clock webstream through Sept. 2.
Daily roundup of the day's news.
A CD compilation of reporting and sounds.
Archive of recordings.
Webstream
We're pursing a single 24/7 stream coordinated by the members of the A-Noise Sound
Coalition. We'd like to create a coordinated webstream in which each affiliate
can participate. The stream isn't exclusive, we support each affiliates' autonomy
and ability to create their own around-the-clock stream. Each affiliate can decide their level
of participation. The central webstream offers the chance for different people
and organizations to meet and work together and also offers listeners a single
place to listen to multiple perspectives. The final approach (single or multiple
webstreams) will be decided by the group. The stream will be made up of:
Live Shows
Pre-recorded segments
Interviews
Call-ins from the street
Music
Daily roundup
A produced and edited segment, likely 10 minutes in length, that encapsulates each day's events.
This will be available online for download and will be distributed to FM broadcasters nationally.
We also hope to translate the Daily Roundup for use internationally.
CD Compilation
An archive or best of culled from the web streams, segments, interviews and performances
made during the RNC protests.

Team Structure and Process
We are a collective. We make decisions by consensus. If the collective cannot reach consensus
within an agreed-upon timeframe for a specific decision, the decision is made by a large-majority
vote. In order for a decision to stand, 4/5ths of the group must agree upon the choice being made.
All collective members can vote and participate in decisions. Working groups are autonomous and
have their own decision-making processes.
Space
Broadcast and editing studios will be located at the NYC Grassroots Media Coalition's convergence center at 40 Worth Street in New York. A second editing studio will be available in Midtown for those who do not wish to travel to Worth street or to pay the GMC's registration fee. Multiple "drop sites" for audio content will be available throughout the city.
Tech
Key tech issues involve getting the streaming server tried and tested (this first occurred during
the DNC relay). We also will need multiple mirrors to the stream and are looking for mirroring
partners. Hardware and studio set up need to be finalized. A workable call-in box needs to happen.
A stable and preferably redundant solution needs to exist for archiving before the event.
